  1. Rajya Sabha passes Bill on transgender rights
    • Rajya Sabha has unanimously passed The Rights of Transgender Persons Bill, 2014 by voice vote.
    • It is the first private members bill to be passed in 46 years.
    • The bill Seeks to provide framework for the formulation and implementation of a comprehensive national policy for ensuring overall development of the transgender persons and their welfare.
    • Two percent reservation in primary, secondary and higher education and in government jobs.
    • Establishment of Employment Exchange, National and State Commissions for Trasngender Persons and Special Transgender Rights Courts.
    • No child who is transgender will be separated from his or her parents on the grounds of being a transgender except on an order of competent court.
    • Penalty for hate speech against transgender persons includes imprisonment extending upto one year and with fine.
  2. Indian-origin diplomat Gopinath Pillai awarded for his services in Singapore
    • Indian-origin diplomat Gopinath Pillai has been bestowed with ‘Outstanding Service Award’ for his services to the city-state by the National University of Singapore (NUS).
    • 78-year-old Gopinath Pillai, who is currently the Ambassador-at-Large of Singapore and special envoy to Andhra Pradesh recieved the award.

  3. Anil Kapoor gets Dinanath Mangeshkar Award
    • Actor Anil Kapoor was conferred the Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar Award on the occasion of the death anniversary of singer Lata Mangeshkar’s father.
    • This was the 73rd edition of the awards. Apart from Anil, actor Dilip Prabhalkar was also conferred with the honour.
    • Last year, the award was given to Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor and musician Zakir Hussain.

  4. Marathi novelist Bhalchandra Nemade bags 50th Jnanpith Award
    • PM Modi awarded the 50th Jnanpith Award to eminent Marathi litterateur Bhalchandra Nemade whose several books, including Kosala and Hindu, have influenced Indian writing.
    • He was presented award comprising of 11 lakh rupees and a citation plaque and a bronze replica of Saraswati.
    • His novel, Kosala, written in 1963 is considered as a path breaking in Marathi literature.

  5. BoB ties up with UAE Exchange for instant money transfer
    • Bank of Baroda, a leading Indian public sector bank, has tied up with UAE Exchange to offer an instant cash transfer facility to NRI customers.
    • UAE Exchange, a global remittance and foreign exchange company, serves over 7.9 million customers worldwide and currently has over 750 branches across 32 countries.
    • Customers can now send money to their desired bank accounts in Bank of Baroda in India, within minutes.
    • They also get a SMS notification the moment the amount is credited in the bank account
