  1. Dr. Pramod Patil and Dr. Ananda Kumar won 2015 Whitley Awards for wildlife conservation
    • Two Indians have been awarded with the prestigious Whitley Awards for their contribution to wildlife conservation.
    • Dr Ananda Kumar, a conservationist from India, was awarded the prize, in honour of his work using innovative communication systems to enable human-elephant coexistence in southern India.
    • Dr Pramod Patil has been awarded for his work to protect the iconic great Indian bustard in the Thar Desert.
  2. Flipkart acquires mobile marketing firm Appiterate
    • Flipkart has announced the acquisition of Appiterate, a mobile engagement and marketing automation company based out of Delhi.
    • Appiterate helps ecommerce companies target consumers better and increase sales by using push notifications and inapp messages.
  3. DRDO scientist conferred prestigious RIN fellowship
    • Senior DRDO scientist G Satheesh Reddy, who played a critical role in the Agni 5 programme, has been conferred the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal Institute of Navigation, a first for an Indian.

  4. India ranks 13th in generating power from nuclear source
    • India stands at the 13th place world-wide in generating electricity from nuclear source.
    • It expects to increase the installed nuclear power capacity from 5,780 MW to 10,080 MW by 2019.
    • This rank is based on the data published in 2014 by Power Reactor Information System of International Atomic Energy Agency.
  5. Surender Singh takes over as new CISF chief
    • Senior IPS officer Surender Singh took over as the new director general of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
    • He succeeds Arvind Ranjan, a 1977-batch IPS officer of Kerala cadre who retired on Thursday.
    • He is the 25th director general of CISF, will remain in office till August 2016.
  6. Canara Bank ties up with insurers
    • Canara Bank has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Life Insurance Corporation of India for offering the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojanainsurance cover to all its eligible customers.
    • According to the MoU, LIC will offer a life cover of ₹2 lakh in case of death of the insured person at a nominal premium of ₹330 per annum.
    • The bank has also partnered with the United India Insurance Company for offering the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana insurance cover.
    • All savings bank account holders in age group of 18 to 50 years can avail themselves of product.

  7. Seychelles to become 161st WTO member
    • A 19-year-long process for Seychelles to become a member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) came to an end yesterday when the island nation’s Minister for Finance Trade and Investment Pierre Laporte signed the accession protocol.
    • Seychelles also became the 33rd government to accede to the rules-based multilateral trading system through Article XII negotiations since the WTO was established in 1995.
  8. CRPF to adopt village in earthquake-hit Nepal
    • Extending a helping hand to the victims of the devastating earthquake in Nepal, paramilitary force CRPF has decided to adopt a village in the Himalayan country
    • The CRPF has decided to adopt Karikat village near Birganj in Nepal to provide people immediate relief and help in its reconstruction.
    • The personnel would reach out to every family in the village with relief and help in its reconstruction.
