  1. BIRAC launches ‘BIRAC AcE Fund’ to accelerate growth of entrepreneurs in biotechnology
    • The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) has launched an equity fund “BIRAC AcE Fund” to address to accelerate the growth of entrepreneurs, in the field of biotechnology.
    • This fund will be operated by BIRAC, a public sector undertaking under the department of biotechnology, ministry of science & technology, Government of India with incubators and business accelerators, as its partners.
  2. President Mukherjee receives first copy of Meira Kumar’s book
    • President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday acquired the first copy of former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar’s book ‘Indian Parliamentary Diplomacy- Speaker’s Perspective’.
    • Speaking on the event, President Mukherjee congratulated Meira Kumar for her book, including that the Parliament portrays the desire of the individuals.
  3. Indian-origin Nobel laureate Sir Venkatraman Ramakrishnan to head Royal Society in UK
    • India-born Nobel laureate Sir Venkatraman Ramakrishnan has been confirmed as president elect of Britain’s prestigious Royal Society.
    • 63-year-old structural biologist shared the 2009 chemistry Nobel Prize for discovering the precise structure of ribosomes – the molecular machines that manufacture proteins inside all living cells.
    • Ramakrishnan, who will be the first Indian-origin scientist to hold the post, was born in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, and studied biology in the US.
    • He is currently deputy director of the British Medical Research Council’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology at Cambridge University.
  4. Ratan Tata to head Indian Railways’ Kaya Kalp council
    • Railway minister Suresh Prabhu has set up two committees in line with the promises made in his maiden rail budget last month, including Innovation Council ‘Kaya Kalp’ headed by former Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata to suggest ways to turn around the ailing organisation.
    • The other committee, under former DIPP secretary Ajay Shankar, has been set up to revamp ministry’s PPP (public private partnership) cell to get private investment.
    • Former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai has been roped in Rai to suggest ways to introduce transparency in the working of railways, especially its finances.

  5. Mahendra Singh Dhoni becomes first Indian skipper to register 100 ODI wins
    • Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the first Indian captain to register 100 One Day International matches, after leading Men in Blue to a 109-run victory over Bangladesh in their 2015 ICC World Cup quarter-final match in Melbourne Cricket Ground.
    • Ricky Ponting with 165 ODI wins and Allan Border with 107 wins are ahead of Dhoni.
