- Cabinet clears 33% quota for women in Delhi Police, all UTs
- The Union Cabinet has approved 33 per cent reservation for women in police forces of all union territories, including the Delhi Police, through direct recruitment in non-gazetted posts.
- The move aims at increasing representation of women in police and to make the force gender sensitive.
- This reservation for women will be applicable “horizontally and in each category (SC/ST/OBC and others) through direct recruitment in non-gazetted posts — from constables to sub-inspectors.”
- Bard of Maharashtra Shahir Krishnarao Sable passes away
- Krishnarao Sable, popularly known as ‘Shahir Sable’, whose songs enriched Maharashtra’s culture, passed away here today after a brief illness. He was 92.
- Born in 1923, Sable penned the evergreen patriotic song ‘Garjaa Maharashtra Majha, Jai Jai Maharashtra Majha’ (Hail! Maharashtra O’ Mine!)
- The bard of Maharashtra, who used entertainment as a medium to awaken social as well as political consciousness, also excelled as a poet, music director, lyricist, an adept percussionist, a creative actor-director as well as a singer.
- Cabinet approves Rs 1,500 crore for Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana
- The Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) with an outlay of Rs 1,500 crore to provide skills training to youth, including Class 10 and 12 drop outs.
- The flagship scheme, which will cover 24 lakh persons, will be implemented by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship through the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).
- Skill training would be done based on the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) and industry led standards. Under the scheme, a monetary reward will be given to trainees on assessment and certification by third party assessment bodies. The average monetary reward would be around Rs 8,000 per trainee.
- Out of the total outlay of Rs 1,120 crore to be spent on skill training of 14 lakh youth, special emphasis has been given to recognition of prior learning for which an amount of Rs 220 crore has been provided.
- Martin Guptill hits highest World Cup score in New Zealand victory
- New Zealand’s Martin Guptill made the highest score in World Cup history with 237 not out against West Indies to send his team into the semi-finals.
- His 163-ball innings in Wellington featured 11 sixes and 24 fours and beat the 215 made by West Indies’ Chris Gayle earlier in the tournament.
- Activist Rajendra Singh wins Stockholm Water Prize 2015
- Rajendra Singh, an eminent environment activist, has been conferred the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize this year for his innovative water restoration efforts and extraordinary courage to empower communities in Indian villages.
- Singh, who is widely popular as the ‘Water Man’, was named the 2015 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate for improving water security in rural India
- He has already won Ramon Magsaysay award in 2001 for his work on community-based water harvesting and water management.
- The Stockholm Water Prize is a global award founded in 1991 and presented annually by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) to an individual, organisation or institution for outstanding water-related achievements.
- India overtakes US as 3rd biggest steel producer
- India has overtaken the US to become the third-largest steel producer in the world with a production of 14.56 million tonnes (MT) in first two months of the year.
- India has been the fourth-largest steel producer for the past five years, behind China, Japan and the US.
