- Lok Sabha has passed the Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Bill, 2015.
- The Bill provides for filing of cheque bounce cases at the place where a cheque is presented for clearance and not the place of issue.
- The Bill seeks to amend the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. It will have implications for over 18 lakh cheque bounce cases pending in various courts.
- Nemtsov’s daughter receives million-euro Polish rights prize
- The journalist daughter of slain Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov on Tuesday received a million-euro ($1.1 million) Polish prize for championing democracy and human rights.
- Zhanna Nemtsova, 31, picked up the annual Solidarity Prize at a ceremony in Warsaw, saying she hoped it would inspire many in Russia to believe “that it’s worth continuing the fight, that we shouldn’t give up.”
- SBI Life launches ‘Smart Humsafar’
- SBI Life Insurance has launched a new product, ‘Smart Humsafar’, a plan which offers multiple benefits of savings and insurance cover for husband and wife under a single policy.
- The product provides financial protection to husband and wife under a single policy.
- In case of death of one of the spouses, a payment of sum assured is made to the surviving spouse, in addition to waiver of future premiums.
- In the event of death of surviving spouse during the reminder of the policy term, the nominee gets the sum assured plus all the accrued bonuses.
- Indian-American Atul Keshap confirmed Ambassador to Sri Lanka
- Indian-American Atul Keshap has been confirmed as the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives, becoming the second Indian-origin diplomat to be posted to the region after Richard Rahul Verma.
- Mr. Keshap (44), a former official at the US Embassy in India, was on Wednesday confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the country’s envoy which would be his first Ambassadorial posting.
- Mr. Keshap and Mr. Verma, the U.S. envoy to India, both trace their origin to Punjab.
- RBI relaxes branch authorisation policy
- Giving greater operational freedom to banks, the Reserve Bank today allowed lenders to shift, merge or close branches, except in rural areas, at their “discretion”.
- RBI said that instructions regarding merger, closure, shifting, part shifting, opening of extension counters and reporting requirements have been reviewed.
- However, shifting, merger, or closure of any rural branch as well as a sole semi urban branch would require approval of the District Consultative Committee (DCC)/ District Level Review Committee (DLRC).
- Further, in case of rural or semi urban branches, banks should ensure that the banking needs of the centre continue to be met through either satellite offices/mobile vans or through Business Correspondents.
- PM Modi declares August 7 as National Handloom Day to mark Swadeshi movement
- To commemorate the 1905 Swadeshi movement the Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced August 7 as ‘National Handloom Day’ at the function held in Chennai.
- At the event PM Modi also launched the ‘India Handloom’ brand to help weavers with brand for global markets.
- The motto behind observing National Handloom Day is to honour the handloom weavers and to carter an impetus to India’s handloom industry.
