  1. TCS appoints Aarthi Subramanian as Executive Director
    • IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) today appointed Aarthi Subramanian, its global head of Delivery Excellence Group, as an Executive Director on the Board.
    • The appointment is for a three-year period and takes the Board strength to 11, of which six are independent Directors.
    • Subramanian, who has over 25 years of experience in the IT sector, is the global head of Delivery Excellence Group at TCS, responsible for governance of service delivery, compliance and risk management.
    • Subramanian holds a BTech in computer science from the National Institute Technology, Warangal and a Masters in engineering management from the University of Kansas, US.
  2. Former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed jailed for 13 years
    • Mohamed Nasheed, the first democratically elected leader of the Maldives, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after being found guilty of terrorism.
    • Nasheed, a respected human rights and environment campaigner, was elected president in the Maldives’ first free polls after the end of 30-year autocratic rule of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in 2008.
  3. Pakistan tests 1st indigenous armed drone, laser guided missile
    • Pakistan today successfully tested its first indigenous all-weather armed drone and a laser guided missile that can strike its targets with pinpoint accuracy.
    • The drone, named Burraq, has the ability to fly in all types of weather conditions and strike its targets with pinpoint accuracy.
    • Pakistan also tested its laser guided missile named Barq.
  4. Jaitley unveils Gandhi statue in London
    • Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley unveiled the long-awaited statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
    • The nine-foot bronze statue of Gandhi was created by Phillip Jackson, a renowned British sculptor, and will stand in the company of Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, and Abraham Lincoln, among others.
  5. Mary Kom to be brand ambassador of Northeast
    • Olympic medal winning boxer MC Mary Kom is being appointed as the brand ambassador of the Northeast to showcase the potential of the region which offers Rs. 2.4 trillion business opportunities across various sectors.
    • Hailing from Manipur, one of the eight northeastern States, Mary Kom is a five—time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.
  6. PM Narendra Modi Flags off Train Service at Talaimannar in Sri Lanka
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off a train service at the north-western Sri Lankan town of Talaimannar – the closest point to India – restored after decades of civil war, completing the reconstruction of the entire Northern Province Railway Line.
    • PM Modi also unveiled a plaque inaugurating Talaimannar 1650 Pier Railway station.
    • The newly-constructed 63-km railway track between Madhu Road and Talaimannar Pier is the last segment of the 265-km long, prestigious Northern Railway Line Reconstruction Project which is being executed by IRCON International Ltd, a Government of India owned company.
  7. Veteran Gandhian Narayan Desai passes away
    • One of the country’s noted Gandhians, Narayan Desai, known for his rendition of Gandhi Katha — stories on the Mahatma’s life — passed away at a private hospital in Surat on Sunday at the ripe age of 90.
    • In 2004, Desai started a lecture series on Gandhi called ‘Gandhi Katha’, which he took across the world and received much acclaim for it.
    • Born in Valsad in Gujarat, he grew up at the Sabarmati Ashram and Sewagram Ashram in Wardha. Inspired by Following Vinobha Bhave’s Bhoodan movement, Desai travelled through Gujarat urging the rich to distribute land among the landless.
    • Desai has several awards to his credit including the Sahitya Akademi Award for Gujarati in 1993 and the Jamnalal Bajaj Award in 1999 and the UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence in 1998.
  8. Kidambi Srikanth wins Swiss Open title
    • Kidambi Srikanth dethroned Viktor Axelsen of Denmark to become the first Indian man to win the $120,000 Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold.
  9. Green India Mission merged with MGNREGA to reclaim forest cover
    • The government has merged the National Mission for a Green India, which aims afforestation at 10 million hectares of land over the next decade, with MGNREGA to increase and improve the country’s forest cover.
    • Modern technology like remote sensing will be used to monitor the progress of this initiative regularly.
    • Currently, green works such as water harvesting, afforestation and farm foresty are undertaken under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme implemented by Rural Development Ministry.
    • The convergence guidelines sets out the approach to be adopted to strengthen co-ordination at field-level for developing forest cover and improving forest-based livelihoods for about three million household.
