  1. Government sets up SIT to probe ’84 riots
    • The government has constituted a three-member special investigation team (SIT) to re-open and re-investigate serious criminal cases relating to 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
    • The SIT will be headed by Pramod Asthana, a 1986 batch IPS officer of the Manipur-Tripura cadre.
    • The team has been given a term of six months to complete the reprobe and file chargesheets against the accused in the proper courts where after investigation, sufficient evidence is found available.
  2. Indian American Researcher Gets $500,000 Science Foundation Award
    • Gurpreet Singh, an Indian American assistant professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering at Kansas State University, has received a $500,000 National Science Foundation Career award for his research on nanosheets.
    • Mr Singh has received the award for his research on “Scalable liquid exfoliation processing of ultrathin two-dimensional metal dichalcogenides nanosheets for energy storage devices.
  3. ICICI bank ties up with UAE Exchange for instant money transfer
    • ICICI bank has tied up with UAE Exchange to offer an instant bank transfer service to the Indians residing in the Gulf nation.
    • ‘FLASHremit’ service started by the bank enables customers to conveniently send money instantly to their beneficiaries in India in Indian Rupees.
    • By using the services the customers of the bank, residing in the UAE, can send money instantly to any ICICI Bank account in India.

  4. World Radio Day observed on 13 February
  5. India ranks lowly 136 in World Press Freedom Index 2015
    • The Reporters Without Borders (RWB) on 12 February 2015 released the World Press Freedom Index (WPFI) 2015.
    • In the WPFI 2015, India was placed at 136th position out of 180 nations that were surveyed worldwide in terms of press freedom.
  6. Ashton Carter confirmed as new US defence secretary
    • Ashton Carter, a close confidant of President Barack Obama and a strong proponent of Indo-US strategic ties, has been confirmed by the Senate as the next American defence secretary.
    • Mr. Carter, 60, will be the 25th U.S. Secretary of Defence, replacing Chuck Hagel who quit from the post in November last amid reports of differences with Mr. Obama.
