  1. Gujarat Handloom Corp to launch e-commerce portal; inks MoU with eBay
    • Gujarat State Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation (GSHHDC) will soon launch its own e-commerce portal under ‘Garvi-Gurjari’ brand to reach out to a bigger customer base and boost sales in overseas markets.
    • GSHHDC, a Gujarat government undertaking has also signed an MoU with global e-commerce giant eBay and plans to tie-up with domestic e-commerce majors as Flipkart and Snapdeal.
  2. LC Goyal appointed next home secretary
    • Union rural development secretary LC Goyal is tipped to be the next Union Home Secretary, following resignation of incumbent Anil Goswami.
    • Goswami resigned as home secretary after the government asked him to put in his papers in the wake of controversy over his alleged attempt to stall the arrest of Saradha scam accused Matang Sinh, a former Congress minister at the Centre.
  3. Govt announces Rs 850 cr package for Andhra
    • The funds for AP include Rs 500 crore as ‘ad hoc support’ to bridge the resource gap for the current financial year as well as Rs 350 crore as special development package for the backward areas in Rayalaseema and north coastal districts.
    • The Centre on Wednesday also sanctioned some sops for the promotion of the industrial sector in AP.
    • The manufacturing units set up in the backward region are to be given 15 per cent additional depreciation on new plant and machinery in the first year of installation.
  4. World Cancer Day observed worldwide today
    • World Cancer day was observed today. As per UN, every year, 8.2 million people die from cancer; at least 1.6 million or 20% of these are tobacco-related.
    • In total, more than 6 million people will die this year from tobacco-related diseases including cardiovascular diseases, chronic lung diseases and cancer.
  5. HDFC Bank raises close to Rs 10,000 crore
    • DFC Bank today raised about Rs 10,000 crore by selling American Depository Receipts and India-listed shares to qualified institutional investors.
    • It was largest offer by a private sector firm.
    • As per an US Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the company has raised USD 1,270.72 million (about Rs 8,000 crore) by issuing 22 million ADS to the global investors.
    • Besides, the bank has raised about Rs 2,000 crore from a QIP (Qualified Institutional Placement) in the domestic market.

  6. MahaMobile app launched by Bank for Maharashtra
    • With the perspective to make the bank more efficient and simpler for the customers, Bank of Maharashtra has rolled out a new mobile application for its customers.
    • This app will to the banking easily it will allow them to view the deposit and loan accounts, do fund transfers, bill payments and much more.

  7. India at the bottom of GIPC index
    • The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Intellectual Property Center (GIPC), on Wednesday, released its third annual International IP Index, ‘UP: Unlimited Potential’.
    • India was ranked second from the bottom in the third edition of GIPC index, while the U.S. was at the top.
    • It covers 30 economies, representing close to 80 per cent of world’s gross domestic product.
    • India was ranked 11 with a score of 7.23 out of 30 against 6.95 per cent in the last edition.
