Teacher's day

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed teachers and students across the nation on Teacher’s day.
  2. Vijayawada will be the new capital of bifurcated Andhra Pradesh
    • Vijayawada, Guntur, Tenali, Mangalagiri ie VGTM region will comprise  the capital region.
    • Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said: “The Cabinet has decided on September 1, 2014, to locate the capital city in a central place of the State around Vijayawada and to go for decentralised development with three mega cities and 14 smart cities.”
  3. India, Australia too ink nuclear agreement
    • On Friday Australian Prime Minister Tony Abott said “Prime Minister Modi and I will today sign a nuclear cooperation agreement that will finally allow Australian uranium to India”
    • India is not a signatory of Non-Proliferation Treaty which delayed the agreement.
  4. Union government approves 7% DA hike
    • The government approved a 7 per cent hike in Dearness allowance raising it to 107% of basic pay with effect from July 1, 2014.
    • This move will benefit around 30 lakh central employees and 50 lakh pensioners.
  5. India and Nepal signed agreement on cross-border power transmission.
  6. SBI launches saving accounts for children
    • Country’s largest PSU bank State Bank of India launched ‘Pehli Udaan’; a singly operated savings bank account for a minor aged 10 years and above and who can sign uniformly, while ‘Pehla Kadam; is a savings bank account for minor of any age operated jointly with his/her parent or guardian.
    • All the account holders will be given an exclusively designed personalized photo ATM-cum-Debit card.
    • The account holders can avail facility of mobile banking with limited transaction facilities like bill payment, top—ups with per day transaction limit of Rs 2,000.
    • Auto sweep with a minimum threshold of Rs 20,000 and in multiple of Rs 1,000 with a minimum of Rs 10,000.
  7. India slips to 71st rank losing 11 places in WEF competitiveness list.
