Functions of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is the premier organization for the archaeological researches and protection of the cultural heritage of India. It was established in 1861. It works under ministry of culture. The major functions of Archaeological Survey of India include maintenance of ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains of national importance. Under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958, the ASI has declared 3656 monuments to be of national importance in the country. ASI has also undertaken major conservation works abroad besides carrying out excavations, explorations, images and other studies in countries like Afghanistan, Nepal, Cambodia and Egypt

The functions of Archaeological Survey of India are:

  • It conducts archeological exploration and excavation regularly
  • It also keeps developing epigraphical research, setting up and reorganization of site museums and training in archaeology
  • Development of cultural and eco-tourism integrating with the monuments
  • Preservation, conservation and environmental development of centrally protected monuments and sites, including World Heritage Monuments and antiquitie
  • Conducting Research and Training in different areas of Archaeology
  • Maintenance of gardens & development of new gardens surrounding centrally protected monuments and sites
  • Implementation of the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act (1972)
  • Regulate all archaeological activities in the country as per the provisions of the Ancient

Directorate of ASI

The Directorate of Archeological Survey of India is situated at Delhi. Usha Sharma is current director general of Archaeological Survey of India. It has 24 regional Circles and 5 Regional Directorates.
